Members of the Walkerton Action Committee, a group of self advocates, were involved in organizing the Speaking Out Retreat Day held on September 7, 2018 at the Knights of Columbus Hall between Walkerton and Mildmay. Over 100 people attended from Guelph/Wellington, London, Toronto, Wiarton, Owen Sound, Wingham, Hanover and Flesherton areas. Keynote speaker, Josh Yandt, The Doorman, was well received, leading discussion on bullying. Self advocates from this area presented on bullying, leadership, and elder abuse.The Council of Community Living Ontario gave information about their advocacy work on behalf of Ontarians with intellectual disabilities. A delicious meals and an energetic dance followed to complete the retreat.

In October, members of this committee organized an All You Can Eat Spaghetti Dinner which was held at Pizza Delight in Walkerton...many thanks to the staff and management at the restaurant, and to the citizens of Walkerton who came to support this fundraising for the Barrier-Free Upgrade to the Brockton Community Garden. Over $800 from tickets and donations was raised at the dinner, and other donations for this project came the next day...the committee was pleased to provide this to the Municipality of Brockton for future accessible gardening.
